Cruise Ship Shore Power - San Diego

The shore power system enables the ships to connect to the utility system and turn off the on board diesel/gas turbine generators.  This reduces pollution and saves the cruise ships fuel costs while at port.  More information about Cochran Marine's Shore Power system can be found on their website.

PowerStudies, Inc worked closely with Cochran Marine Services by providing engineering support during the design, construction, and start up phases of this project.  The PowerStudies, Inc engineers performed load flow, short circuit, and selective device coordination studies.

The protection engineer determined protective relay settings for the SEL relays for the primary and secondary breakers at B Street Pier.  Our engineers also worked with the utility company, Southern Cal Edison to determine settings that would coordinate with the utility's upstream relays and expectant ship loads.  This highly complex shore power system required multiple relay groups to accommodate the 6.6 and 11 kV ships from Princess Cruise lines.
