Northwest Metal Products is a metal products manufacturing plant located in Puyallup, WA. This facility has a 4,000-ampere service and a large number of lightly loaded motors. This resulted in an average power factor of 81-84%. The customer was being charged a monthly power factor penalty charge by the local utility.
Power Systems Engineering was hired to determine the location and size of the power factor correction capacitors necessary to reduce the power factor penalty.
We recommended that the customer purchase and install a 350kVAR capacitor bank. This corrected the power factor above 95% and completely eliminated the power factor penalty. This resulted in a monthly saving on the customer's utility power bill.
